The FAS Final Examinations Office schedules and coordinates placement examinations, midyear examinations, and final examinations. Please note that hourly and midterm examinations are the responsibility of the course head; the FAS Final Examinations Office is not involved in their scheduling or administration. Information about the administration of final and midyear examinations is outlined in the "Academic Calendar" chapter of Handbook for Students.

Placement Examinations

The schedule for placement examinations is posted to the website approximately two weeks prior to their administration - the last week of August for fall term placement exams, and the third week in January for spring term placement exams.

Placement exams, while primarily directed at freshmen, are open to all students. Fall placement exam information for upperclass students may be found in the Online Communication Packet in mid-August.

For additional information about the placement exam process, please refer to the FAQ posted on the Freshman Dean's Office website, at http://www.fdo.fas.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k3806&pageid=icb.page177871

Midyear and Final Examinations

The final schedule for midyear and final examinations will be posted to the website during the first week of November for fall final/midyear examinations and during the last week of March for spring final examinations. Students are advised not to make any travel plans until the final examination schedule is published and are expected to be available for the duration of the Final Examination Period.

Information about final exam groups and dates and the final exam scheduling process may be found in the "Academic Calendar" chapter of Handbook for Students.

Makeup examinations are held for students who receive approval from the Administrative Board of Harvard College. If called upon to do so, course heads must prepare appropriate makeup examinations and grade them. Makeup examinations are usually administered the third week of each term.

Taking Exams with Accommodations

The Exams Office works jointly with the Accessible Education Office to ensure that appropriate exam accommodations are provided to students with documented disabilities. Any such student, who has not yet done so, should contact the Accessible Education Office for assistance.

Any student who anticipates exam conflicts, either due to religious observance or inability to be in Cambridge at the time of a scheduled exam, should click on either the Religious Out of Sequence Request Form or the In Absentia Exam Request Form link on the left of the page for more information.

Please contact the FAS Exams Office for additional information.
